Which Skip Size Do I Need?

Skip sizes are normally described in cubic yards, but most customers do not naturally think about their rubbish in cubic yards. A better approach is to consider the type of project, the materials being removed and how much waste you realistically expect to produce.

A small decluttering job may only require one of our mini skips. Kitchen and bathroom work may require a midi or builder's skip, while a major property clearance can justify considerably more volume.

Heavy Waste and Bulky Waste Are Not the Same Thing

One of the most important considerations when choosing a skip is what will actually be put into it. A bigger skip does not automatically mean it can take a bigger load of dense material.

Soil, rubble, concrete, bricks and hardcore can become extremely heavy. Suitable smaller and medium-sized skips can therefore be a better option for dense waste than our very largest containers.

By contrast, 10, 12 and 14 cubic yard skips provide lots of physical volume and are particularly useful for lighter bulky materials such as furniture, timber, packaging and suitable clearance waste. Weight restrictions apply to these larger skips.

What Can I Put in a Skip?

Standard skips can take many common non-hazardous waste materials, subject to the type of hire arranged. These can include general household rubbish, timber, garden waste, suitable building materials, metal and other everyday waste.

However, not everything can simply be mixed together. Items such as plasterboard, mattresses, fridges, freezers, televisions, monitors, electrical equipment and batteries may require prior agreement, separate processing or additional charges.

Can I Put a Skip on My Driveway?

Private off-road land is usually the simplest place to position a skip. Many of our smaller skips fit comfortably on ordinary domestic driveways, while the larger sizes require progressively more room.

Do not measure only the space where the skip will eventually sit. Our delivery vehicle needs enough access and manoeuvring room to position and later retrieve the container safely.

Do I Need a Permit for My Skip?

If your skip can be placed entirely on your own suitable private land, such as a driveway, a highway skip permit will not normally be required. Different requirements apply if the skip needs to occupy a public highway.

Permit arrangements can vary according to the relevant local authority and location, so this should be considered before delivery rather than after the skip arrives.

Don't Overfill Your Skip

Ordering too small a skip and trying to squeeze everything into it is a false economy. Waste must remain within the sides of the container so that the skip can be safely collected and transported.

Make Better Use of the Space You're Paying For

Loading technique matters too. Throwing bulky objects randomly into a skip can leave large pockets of unusable space. How do I book a skip with Taylors Skip Hire?

You can arrange your skip by contacting our team or requesting a quote online. Tell us where you are, what type of waste you need to dispose of and roughly how much you have. If you already know the skip size you require, let us know that too.

If you aren't sure about the size, that's no problem. Describing the job and the materials involved gives us useful information to help you choose. You can also request a skip hire quote online.

How long can I keep my skip?

Our standard skip hire period is 14 days. If your renovation, clearance or building project will take longer, speak to us about an extended hire period and we can provide a bespoke quotation.

If you finish sooner than expected, contact us to arrange collection rather than leaving a full skip sitting unnecessarily.

Do I need to be at home when my skip is delivered?

Not necessarily. If we have clear instructions, suitable access and know exactly where the skip needs to be positioned, it may be possible to complete the delivery without you being there.

However, somebody should be present if there is any uncertainty about positioning, access or where on the property the skip should go. Giving us accurate information beforehand helps avoid delays on delivery day.

How much space does the delivery vehicle need?

More than the dimensions of the skip itself. The skip lorry needs sufficient width, height and manoeuvring room to approach the proposed position, unload the container and return to collect it.

Cars, narrow gates, walls, low trees, scaffolding and overhead cables can all cause access problems. If your property has awkward access, please discuss it with us before booking rather than assuming that because the skip physically fits, the delivery vehicle will too.

Can a skip damage my driveway?

A loaded skip can be extremely heavy, so the condition and construction of the surface need to be considered. Suitable protective boards may help spread the load and reduce direct contact between the skip and the driveway.

Can you deliver a skip if my property has restricted access?

Possibly, depending on the restriction. Tight entrances, narrow residential roads, parked vehicles and limited turning space can make conventional skip delivery more difficult, but every site is different.

Can I hire a skip for just one room or a small clear-out?

Yes. Skip hire isn't limited to major building projects. Our smaller skips can be useful for decluttering a room, clearing a small garden, emptying a shed or garage, or dealing with waste from modest DIY work.

If you only have a relatively small amount of rubbish, compare the cost and convenience of a skip with direct collection. For some jobs, our rubbish removal service may be the simpler option.

Can I mix different types of ordinary waste in the same skip?

Many general skip hires can contain a mixture of suitable non-hazardous waste, but that does not mean every material can be mixed together. Some waste streams require separate arrangements, and the type and weight of material can also affect which skip is appropriate.

Tell us if you expect to dispose of unusual materials or particularly large quantities of soil, rubble, plasterboard, electrical items or other specialist waste. It is much easier to establish the correct arrangement before delivery than after the skip has been loaded.

Can other people put rubbish in my skip?

If a skip is easily accessible, particularly when positioned near a road, there is a possibility that somebody else could add their rubbish without permission. Apart from taking up space you've paid for, this creates a problem if somebody deposits prohibited material.

Can I move the skip after it has been delivered?

You should not attempt to reposition a skip yourself once it has been delivered. Even an empty skip is a large, heavy container, and trying to drag, lift or otherwise move one can damage the skip, the surrounding property or create a safety risk.

Make sure you're happy with the intended position before delivery. If circumstances change afterwards, contact us rather than attempting to move it yourself.

What if I finish filling my skip earlier than expected?

You don't have to keep a full skip for the entire standard hire period simply because you originally booked it for 14 days. Once you've finished, contact Taylors Skip Hire and arrange collection.

For larger projects producing waste continuously, speak to us if you expect to fill one skip and require another. We can discuss the most practical arrangement for your project.

Can I hire more than one skip?

Yes. Larger renovations, construction projects and commercial jobs can generate more waste than a single container can accommodate. Depending on the project, this could mean arranging additional skips or considering a larger waste-management option.

For very substantial quantities of suitable waste, our roll-on roll-off skips may be worth discussing.

Do you provide skip hire for builders and businesses as well as households?

Yes. We work with domestic customers, landlords, tradespeople, builders and businesses. Skips can be supplied for suitable refurbishment waste, commercial clear-outs, construction work and other projects as well as ordinary household jobs.
