How Long Can You Keep a Skip?
Our standard skip hire period is 14 days, which is long enough for most home clear-outs, garden projects and small renovations. If you need the skip for longer, we can extend the hire or provide a bespoke quote for longer-term rental, and if you finish early, you can call us for a collection whenever you are ready.
Why 14 Days Is the Standard Hire Period
Two weeks gives most customers enough time to fill a skip without rushing, while allowing us to keep skips moving around Surrey and Sussex so they are available when people need them. A weekend garden tidy might only need the skip for a few days, but a kitchen refit, loft conversion or house clearance often runs to a full fortnight once you allow for trades turning up on different days. The prices shown on our skip hire cost guide are based on this standard 14-day period.
Extending Your Skip Hire
Building work has a habit of overrunning, so it is common to need a skip for a little longer than planned. Just let us know before the end of your hire period and we will confirm whether an extension is possible and what it will cost. On longer projects, it is often better value to swap a full skip for an empty one rather than keep a single skip on site for weeks, especially if you are generating waste faster than expected. If you are not sure how quickly you will fill it, our guide on how to choose the right skip can help you pick a size that matches the pace of your project.
How Long Does a Skip Permit Last?
If your skip sits on your own drive or land, the hire period is simply agreed between you and us. If it needs to go on the road, the time it can stay there is also limited by the skip licence issued by the council. In West Sussex, for example, a skip licence lasts for up to 14 calendar days, and extensions have to be applied for before it runs out. Other councils set their own terms, and our guide to skip permits in Surrey, Sussex and Kent explains how each area works. Leaving a skip on the road after its licence has expired can lead to a fine, so it is important to tell us early if your plans change.
How Long Does It Take to Fill a Skip?
This depends far more on the type of job than the size of the skip. A garage or loft clear-out can fill a mini skip in an afternoon, while renovation waste tends to build up steadily over a week or two. Heavy materials such as soil and rubble fill the weight allowance long before they reach the top, so check our guide to skip weight limits if you are digging out a garden or knocking down a wall. Loading carefully also helps you get more into the space, as our guide on using the space in a skip efficiently explains.
Keeping Your Skip Safe While You Have It
The longer a skip is on site, the more likely it is that someone else will be tempted to use it. Covering it overnight and placing it where you can see it from the house both help, and our guide on stopping other people from using your skip has more practical tips. It is also worth keeping an eye on the weather, as heavy rain can add weight to waste such as cardboard and soil, which is covered in our guide on whether to cover a skip in the rain.
Booking the Right Hire Period
When you book, tell us roughly how long the job will take and where the skip will go, and we will advise on the most cost-effective option. You can see our full range of sizes on our skip hire page, or get in touch for a quote tailored to your project.
